Consequences of too much stress

In Jacquelyn Ferguson’s “Let your body win – Stress Management Plain and Simple Book” that I picked up at the Nederland Library, she has a list of what consequences there are with too much stress in your life.

Everybody develops stress symptoms differently.  Some people show their stress mostly through physical problems while others exhibit theirs through bad habits, which can lead to physical problems.  Here is a list of some of the warning signs that you are under enough stress to be paying consequences.  Which of these do you experience?

  • Physical signs of stress such as
  • headaches
  • back pain
  • indigestion
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • An increase in any bad habit such as
  • nail biting
  • smoking
  • over/under eating
  • drinking
  • sleeping
  • abusing drugs
  • hair twirling/pulling
  • excessive TV watching
  • Emotional and mental symptoms such as
  • depression
  • panic attacks
  • road rage
  • obsessive worrying

 Stress Break #1 – Regular physical exercise.  Yoga ranks right at the top of good things you can do for yourself to reduce the harmful effects of stress.  It’s not the cure-all, but when combined with other healthy practices it can facilitate better health.  It’s a wonderful way to get the benefits of:

  • Relaxation and stress reduction: yoga’s breathing is instant stress reduction since it’s the opposite of the fight/flight shallow breathing.
  • Chronic illness management:  yoga is known to help asthma, depression, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and pretty much anything that afflicts humanity.
  • Greater mental focus.
  • Mindfulness (being more tuned into your body so you can know when it’s trying to send you a message that you need to slow down or fix something).
  • Increased flexibility and balance:  yoga instructors have yo move only as much as is comfortable for you.  Gradually you’ll find yourself stretching more and more – far beyond where you started.  You’ll develop greater range of motion, which helps to protect you from injury in other activities.

So come to a gentle beginning yoga class with Gaileee.  You’ll learn various breathing techniques, stretch, lengthen your muscles, gain better balance and flexibility, and you might laugh a bit too!  Monday and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3515 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas.
$5 for Methodist, $8 for non-Methodist.  Childcare available upon 24 hour request.
