Now you can. Right now while you read this post.

Sit up straight and take a deeper breathe than you normally do. Hold it for a second or two, and let the air out with a sigh. Go ahead. No one will notice.

Now, do it again. Take a deeper breathe than before. Hold it for a moment or two and just… let … it … go.

Most people tend to breathe very shallow in their chest. Shallow breathing promotes stress and tension. Deep breathing melts it away.

In a few minutes of deep breathing, you can actually eliminate all stress and tension, lower your blood pressure, and instantly gain a lot more positive attitude.

Remember, you don’t have to be flexible, or in shape to do yoga. If you can breathe you can do some form of yoga. The more out of shape that you are, the more you’ll see immediate results in a regular practice.  AGAIN, you don’t need any previous experience to make dramatic changes in your life in a very short time. According to 2016 Yoga in America Study Conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance Reveals Growth and Benefits of the Yoga Practice.

So most people start yoga because they want to improve some aspect of their health and wellbeing.  The survey sure does indicate this!

FINDING THE RIGHT TEACHER:
The problem is most yoga teachers teach to the 35 and under crowd.

Most yoga teachers haven’t been trained to teach people who don’t fit the traditional YOGA BODY model.

For example, students who are:

  • Over the age of 40
  • Overweight
  • Living a sedentary lifestyle
  • Inexperienced in fitness training

So what are the barriers people have to over come to get started?

  • Unsure if it’s right for me.

I teach beginners yoga at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3515 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas.  On Mondays at 6:15 PM, you’ll need a yoga mat, and a $10 fee.

Additionally I teach Chair Yoga on Thursdays at 10:00 AM, either a $5 donation or a specific donation of food for our church’s back pack food ministry.

A little something about me. I am 58 years old, and have been teaching yoga now for over 18 years.  My favorite class is to teach yoga to someone who is new to this unique exercise format.  Either with the assist of using a Chair, or using the yoga mat, where we get up and down off the ground (I often use a chair in this format too!).

Men in Yoga?  You Bet!  Nederland Texas Beginner Yoga Classes.

I think I have answered this question about 5 times this last week.  Yes we have men in the beginners yoga classes at Wesley UMC.  Though not many  men come, but the ones that do really seem to like it!

A bonus, if you are a golfer, it will increase your swing by 10-15%!  Plus easing back pain, that sometimes comes with a golf game!

Mondays 6:15 PM, $10, a Yoga Mat and be bold to come!  I dare you!  Oh, and by the way, helps to ease stress, gain strength & flexibility, better balance, build bone mass, and a little meditation and breathing go a long way!

When the weather is nice, and the ants are low, we sometimes do yoga out in the prayer garden.  Very serene!
