You call it Water, I call it Aqua…its all good….water yoga for ms, fibromyalgia, arthritis and prenatal….

You may well be aware of the many health benefits that can be derived from
practicing Yoga – –

— but did you know that by combining proven yoga exercises with the healing effects of movement in water, medical evidence now lists therapeutic values that range from physiotherapy for the muscles, to increased movement for multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia, arthritis, and prenatal patients. This is the practice of Yoga in water, is called, Water Yoga, or more modern terms, Aqua Yoga….

For over five thousand years yoga has been helping people find relief from everyday stress while strengthening and firming. Now, yoga takes you into the pool to ease tense muscles, tone up the internal organs, and improve the flexibility of the body’s joints and ligaments.

Every fibromyalgia expert will tell you that exercise is an essential component of any fibromyalgia treatment program. However, most fibromyalgia patients complain––with valid reason––that exercise is difficult and painful. So how can people with fibromyalgia get the exercise they need without causing themselves more pain? Water exercise is one good way.

Benefits of Exercising in Water
Water provides several benefits that make exercise easier, less painful and more effective.

Water’s buoyancy decreases the effects of gravity, displacing 85 percent of your weight. As a result, it takes less effort to move because you don’t have to support your whole weight. The buoyancy of water also takes the weight off of your joints, allowing for more flexibility. The hydrostatic pressure of water reduces joint swelling and inflammation, which makes exercising easier and less painful. Water provides resistance, which helps you increase strength and improve balance. The resistance factor also burns more calories. An exercise done in water can burn twice as many calories as the same exercise done on land. Immersion in water promotes relaxation, reduces muscle fatigue and lessens pain perception.

Adaptive Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis

Just finished taking an Adaptive Yoga workshop for Multiple Sclerosis. Yoga Teachers who had allready reached the level of Registered Yoga Teacher Status from Yoga Alliance were qualified to take the training. Here is a recap…

o MS is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that causes damage to nerve axons.
o Damage can occur with and without symptoms.
o MS affects movement, cognition and energy.
o Stress makes MS worse.

* Yoga can help increase function and delay or possibly prevent disability (by maintaining function):
* Breath
* Movement – gentle, repetitive, appropriate, adaptive
* Relaxation techniques
* Yogic philosophy

I look forward to implementing some of the elements from the workshop in the gentle Yoga classes that I teach, and possibly in the near future offering a MS Yoga class.
