Not Enough Shut-Eye? Try Yoga Nidra – It’s Transformational Sleep Time

Yogic Sleep

Yoga Nidra, Yogic Sleep, Guided Relaxation – It’s all Transformational Sleep!

Most of us do not get enough rest. As a culture, we’re always connected, often stressed, and our nervous systems are constantly in a fight-or-flight, sympathetic state. Yoga nidra is an effective and efficient way to access the “rest and digest” parasympathetic state, which is where healing happens.

Yoga nidra is often referred to as “yogic sleep,” a paradoxical state of being between sleep and consciousness that’s conducive to deeply emotional and physical healing, rewiring your brain, and self-exploration. The practice of yoga nidra starts with a personal intention. So while it truly depends on the intention, yoga nidra will help you rest, restore, de-stress, increase awareness, undo bad habits, and eventually understand your true calling and higher purpose.

In addition to the benefits of the actual practice, yoga nidra is accessible to everyone, can be done almost anywhere at very low cost, and is a simple way to start a meditation practice.

An entire Yoga Nidra session is done while lying down in final relaxation.

Come joins us in Beginners Yoga on Monday night at 6:15 PM where we do some mindful movement, breathwork, guided rest and gratitude!  $10 at Wesley UMC, 3515 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas.

Spinal movements in Veterans Yoga – Beaumont Texas

One of the things that I have noticed in chair yoga classes are similar yoga pose offerings.

I took LVCYT training at the Open Center in New York City, back in October of 2012.  Laskmi Voelker has this set of yoga poses that I use in almost every class I teach, whether it is Beginners Mat class or Chair Yoga Fitness.

The Six Essential Spinal Movements.  It is lovely!

Side Lateral Flexion

Side Lateral Flexion seated on the floor, or you may on a chair!

Cat/Cow

and finally, Seated Twist.

Other Yoga offerings in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Orange, Port Arthur, Nederland) area

Seated Twist, on the yoga mat, but may also be done seated on the chair

I use them at the beginning and end of class.  They are great!

FINDING THE RIGHT TEACHER:
The problem is most yoga teachers teach to the 35 and under crowd.

Most yoga teachers haven’t been trained to teach people who don’t fit the traditional YOGA BODY model.

For example, students who are:

  • Over the age of 40
  • Overweight
  • Living a sedentary lifestyle
  • Inexperienced in fitness training

So what are the barriers people have to over come to get started?

  • Unsure if it’s right for me.
  • Do not know how to get started.
  • I don’t exercise.
  • No place to go to
  • I feel out of place

Take the first step, give me a call, Gail Pickens-Barger, 409-727-3177.  I teach yoga for beginners.  Plus I teach yoga for those who don’t like the idea of getting down on the ground (Chair Yoga).

Two classes available for you to try, or private one-on-one sessions in your home.

What do you need?

  1. A desire to improve some aspect of your health and well being!

I teach beginners yoga at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3515 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas.  On Mondays at 6:15 PM, you’ll need a yoga mat, and a $10 fee.

Additionally I teach Chair Yoga on Thursdays at 10:00 AM, either a $5 donation or a specific donation of food for our church’s back pack food ministry.

Questions?  Please call me on my home phone at 409-727-3177.

A little something about me. I am 58 years old, and have been teaching yoga now for over 18 years.  My favorite class is to teach yoga to someone who is new to this unique exercise format.  Either with the assist of using a Chair, or using the yoga mat, where we get up and down off the ground (I often use a chair in this format too!).
